Melbourne Zoo was opened in 1862 and thus it's the oldest zoo in Australia. It was constructed to assimilate the London Zoo. Till 1870 the Zoo was used mainly for acclimatisation of the domestic animal which were brought to the island. Then more exotic animals were shown to the public thanks to Albert Alexander Cochrane Le Souef. The gardens in the Zoo were developed to be suitable for picnics and walks.

Among the last animals welcomed in the zoo are White Colobus monkey, Pygmy Hippo and two two Snow Leopard cubs. You can read more on the official website of Melbourne Zoo.
