Melbourne is one of the most beautiful places in the world. Famous with it's nightlife and beautiful sightseeings, it's the second most popular city in Australia. This town is relativly "young" and it's history is since 1835. First it was named after it's establisher John Batman, but then in 1837 it's name was changed in tribute to the prime minister of Britain William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne. According to the statistics the population of Melbourne nowadays is about 4 million. As reasons for this impressive number we can see the favorable location of the city and it's highly developed infrastructure. Of course we can't ignore the meaning of the strong push that gave the Victorian gold rush to the growth of the town. The gold rush in Victoria led to incresing the population of this port city by nearly three-quarters. If you wonder how long is there a Chinatown in your dear Melbourne you have to look exactly to this period. Seeing the opportunities in the fast growing town, Chinese imigrants founded Chinatown in the begining of the Gold rush in 1851. Unfortunately (but logically) the number of the native population dropped dramatically. In 1880s melborne was the largest city in Australia. It's interesting that Melbourne is one of the few cities which didn't suffered from severe crisis after the World Wars. The reason is that it became a home for a lot immigrants from the countries which participated in the wars.
Since 1997 Melbourne has positive and steady growth of it's economy and popultaion. This made the town the Australian economic leader in 2004. No wonder Melbourne is a "motherland" for expressions like "Australian dream". It's also famous for it's parks and high buildings. It was announced City of Literature by UNESCO and wins three time the prize world's most livable cities by The Economist.
There is a lot more to be said abotut Melbourne but this will be tha topic of my future posts. So aren't you already proud to live in Melbourne?
