The Gardens of Melbourne

Melbourne is famouse for it's beautiful park and gardens. Most of them were established by the European inhabitants who wished to bring the European style in the new land. This explains the great amount of Victorian objects in the gardens like sculptures, monuments and public art. Most of the the inhabitants in 19th century looked at Australia like a wild place which has to be improved. They diddn't know that the park land around the "Blue Lake" was acctually managed by the Aboriginal inhabitants in order to create more favourable environment. This is called 'firestick farming'. One of the main figures in keeping Melbourne green is Lieutenant-Governor Charles La Trobe. In 1839 he arrived here handed over to Governor Hotham and made sure to provide Merlbourne with a lot of 'public lands'. With the time some of theme were occupied by public buildings and some were sold for privite housing. So in the end the idea of La Trobe was not fully fulfilled but a large amount of it's land is now parks and gardens.

Now Melbourne is one of the greenest cities capitals in the worls. It has more than 18 000 street trees. An impressive fact is that the gardens are among the city and are within an esy to walk distance. Among the most popular parklands are Royal Botanic Gardens, Fitzroy Gardens, Treasury Gardens, King's Domain, King's Domain, Alexandra Gardens, Queen Victoria Gardens, Flagstaff Gardens, Royal Park. I suggest to every tourist to visit at least one of these places. Don't miss the beauty of Melbourne.
